Meet Nigel, the Loveable Lion from The Lion & Rose

Nigel, our Lovable Lion with a couple of fans at the San Antonio Highland Games

San Antonio Highland Games

We had great fun at the San Antonio Highland Games this weekend! The Lion & Rose was a proud sponsor of the games. We sponsored an entertainment stage, had a food booth, and were featured on the back of the Scottish Heavy Athletic T-shirts and on the back page of the event program.

Our Lion, Nigel, made his first San Antonio debut and participated in the “Mascot Caber Toss” along with Clucky from Golden Chick, Bonnie Sue, the Lock Medina Monster from the Highland Games, Chips & Salsa, a cute cat and dog pair from the Humane Society, and Guinness, everyone’s favorite pint! The crowd really loved Nigel, especially the kiddos. Chelsea from Stone Oak was Nigel and did a wonderful job! And in case you were wondering, Guinness won the Caber Toss; so maybe that whole “Guinness for Strength” thing is true!

Shannon and Gabe did a great job managing the food booth! A special thank you to them and their awesome staff this weekend; Greg, Juvencio, George, Kiddy, Tabby and Amanda from Park North, and Laura from Stone Oak.

Trip to London Winner: Nancy Weber!

“Beyond appreciative and grateful.” That’s how Nancy describes her feelings towards winning our Trip for Two to London giveaway on Thursday, Dec. 22 at The Lion & Rose at Park North. Nancy was a our lucky winner, out of roughly 25,000 registrants, including The Lion & Rose Email Rewards Club members, Facebook fans and Twitter followers.

We couldn’t have chosen a better winner for this trip. Not only is Nancy a frequent guest of our Forum location, a fan of our comfortable atmosphere, great menu and drinks, but due to a battle with cancer, she and her husband never had the opportunity to go on a honeymoon—until now! Thankfully Nancy found out the same week as winning the trip that her cancer was still in remission. Wow!

What’s on Nancy’s London itinerary? Well, frankly, a whole slew of things: Buckingham Palace, Parliament, the London Eye, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and more. We look forward to seeing the photos!

Story on our Recent Awards!

San Antonio, Texas – The awards keep coming for this local pub and they don’t seem to be slowing down. The Lion & Rose British Restaurant & Pub has just been voted Best Sports Bar by San Antonio Magazine for the second year in a row, both readers’ and editors’ choice.  “We’re honored to be chosen as San Antonio’s favorite place to watch sports,” said Allen Tharp, owner and CEO of The Lion & Rose. “We pride ourselves on offering everything from pro and college football, soccer, basketball, rugby, baseball, golf and tennis. We’ve always got a game on!”

in 2010 all five Lion & Rose locations, four in San Antonio and one in Austin, became Official US Soccer Bars to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup and served up large doses of soccer alongside British breakfasts to thousands of fans during those early morning games televised from South Africa.  It’s no doubt that this dedication to the soccer fans of San Antonio and Austin helped the pub become selected as the Official US Soccer Bar for the month of September, a coveted spot competed for by all Official US Soccer Bars nationwide.

In October 2010, The Lion & Rose was honored with a new title: one of the Top 50 Work Places for midsized companies in San Antonio (number 19 to be exact), proving not only do guests and sports fans love them, but their employees do too.  In fact, many of their employees were regular guests before they were on the payroll.  “I frequented The Lion & Rose at Stone Oak for quite some time before coming on board,” said Katie Thompson, Director of Marketing and Special Events for the company. “Once you spend time in the pub, you really begin to develop a love for it. It’s like a second home and the team, like family.”

Don’t think because The Lion & Rose is a pub they’ve forgotten about the food.  It is definitely no afterthought here.  Both their Abbey Road Ribs and Hackney Hot Wings have won awards at San Antonio food expos.  In fact, the pub has a full menu, including one for kids, and is open daily at 11am for lunch.  Each location also serves Sunday Brunch at 11am and if you really want to experience something special, try their Afternoon Tea service, available at their Westlake location (reservations needed).  Full service off site catering is also available for weddings, corporate gatherings and special events.

The pub will be celebrating its 7th year in business this December.  It’s obvious The Lion & Rose has made its mark and has become the “local” (what the Brits call their pub of choice) in the Rivercity.

You can find The Lion & Rose British Restaurant & Pub at 5148 Broadway (Alamo Heights), 842 NW Loop 410 (Park North Shopping Center), 700 E Sonterra Blvd (Stone Oak), 8211 Agora Pkwy (Forum Shopping Center) and in Austin at 701 S Capital of Tx Hwy (The Village at Westlake Shopping Center) and online at www.TheLionandRose.com. The Lion & Rose was created and founded by owner Allen Tharp of San Antonio, who opened the first of these London-style pubs in December 2004 in Alamo Heights. At The Lion & Rose, it is believed that pubs aren’t just about drinking, but that a true British pub, unlike many area bars, is a place to gather for a great meal, warm conversation, good music and fine spirits.  That’s exactly what you’ll find at The Lion & Rose.
